Company C
John D. Benson
- Corporal
John Benson moved to Minnesota after the war. He had many children and inherited a farm from his father William Benson who obtained it from a War of 1812 veteran as part of the Homestead Act and the deed was signed and filled out by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861. He had his legs amputated late in life with coronary disease which has a been a heredity related problem for each generation of the family ever since. For some reason I found he entered the war as a Corporal but exited as a private. He was moved to Company D for a period before returning to Company C. He kept his uniform which has been passed down by other family members.

Company C
Collins Abel Burnham
- Captain
Capt. C.A. Burnham was part of the original Company C, as was his brother-in-law, Lt. James S. Buttolph. Somehow he musterd out in early 1863. No offical record of wound/injury... family story was that he had a metal plate in his head from the 1st Richmond, VA (1862)...but no pension record of injury. He was a major alcoholic after the war (post-traumatic stress disorder??) and could not relate well to others. He was shot to death by his son (My GGrandfather) in 1900 in a drunken rage (he had been drunk for weeks).

Company F
George O Smith
Rank Unknown
b:7-29-1841 Stockholm, Saint Lawrence County, New York d:3-1-1913 Newton,Kansas

Evening Kansan Republican, Monday, March 3, 1913,

A wearer of the bronze button who answered the taps summons Saturday night about ten 0'clock, was G. O. Smith. He passed away at his home at 1007 East First street at the age of 71 years.

Mr. Smith is well and favorably known in Harvey County, having resided here the past forty years. He came here in the 70's and took up a claim upon which the family lived for some time, later moving to Newton. Mrs. Smith preceded him to her eternal home two years ago. His sister, Miss Thankful Smith, and son Linton, have lived with him at the home on First street. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. B. H.(Lena) Northcott of Hesston, and Mrs. John (Carrie) Myers, and son William of Newton. He is a member of the G. A. R. which organization will participate in the funeral service. The funeral service will be held at the home at 2 0'clock Wednesday afternoon and at 2:45 at the Christian Church.

Evening Kansan Republican, Wednesday, March 5,1913.

In 1861 he answered his country's call and enlisted in Company F, 92nd New York Volunteers, serving faithfully for three years and being in some of the most decisive battles of the Pennsylvania Campaigns in Virginia.

'The muffled drums sad roll has beat the soldiers last tattoo. No more on life's parade shall meet that brave and fallen foe. On fame's eternal camping ground Their silent tents are spread, and glory guards with silent round the bivouac of the dead.'

He was married to Charlotte A. Thomas in 1867 and five years later they came to Kansas and settled on a claim, enduring hardships which only those who have passed through them can appreciate. For over thirty years he has been identified with the city of Newton, has watched with pride its growth from a little village to a prosperous city.
